I think that most times the "truth" can hurt anyone, if your have secrets or "hide things".
Its not just an American trait to use "truth" as the argument.

We Americans have a problem. We tend to believe that all people love the truth and can use logic to solve difficulties. Unfortunately, we are finding that is less and less true.
