I am 78 years old and have been hearing impaired since I was about 50, so I am pleased to see you are doing this presentation.

I am sure you have heard that hearing impairment is often caused by loud noise, such as listening to loud music or repeatedly having a gun fired close by. But many people have no idea what caused them to lose their hearing.

I have an 80 decibel loss in each ear, which I believe is a side effect of having scarlet fever as an adult, when I was almost 50.
Very fortunately, I am one who can be helped by hearing aids but, believe me, there is nothing like having your natural hearing.

Here are some things that I appreciate people doing to assist me in hearing them:

Looking directly at me when they talk. I am apparently doing a bit of lip reading (the newest terminology is speech reading) because I am really lost when someone turns their back to me and continues to talk. Doctors are really bad about this, as they have a habit of turning around and looking at my chart as they continue to talk.

Speaking in a loud (but not shouting) voice and with clear diction.

Showing patience. It is bad enough to be so hard of hearing and have to ask things over but even more hurtful when I can tell by a person's facial expression that they have become impatient with me. When I give an inappropriate answer to a question because I didn't hear it correctly, someone who doesn't know me may speak to me as if I am retarded. Now that's really embarrassing!

Believing that sometimes I hear better than others. I have one friend who, when I am having an especially good day, will say, "Now you heard that!" Believe me, I hear everything that I can and I would be delighted to hear better all the time.

There is an association that is helpful to people with hearing loss. It used to be called SHHH, Self Help for Hard of Hearing, but the name was recently changed to Hearing Loss Association.

Hearing aids are not the only device helpful to people with hearing loss. I have highly amplified telephones and just couln't do without them. Also, I have an alarm that makes a lamp blink. Without my hearing aids on, I cannot hear even the loudest alarm clock, but the light in my eyes awakens me. I also have a bed shaker which can be attached to a clock and is very effective but I don't use it because the light works for me.

I have a telecoil in my hearing aids which is compatible with a loop system. Tuned to the correct frequency, this is a wonderful help. One of the men at my church set up a system which works with the microphones and I hear the sound just as if someone were speaking directly into my ear. I wear a loop around my neck at church and turn my hearing aids to the telecoil position, don't even have to plug anything into my ears.

My daughter is deaf, but considering the fact that she is only 6, there isn't much you can get out of her.

One thing that is important to consider is that children like Evelyn are extremely perceptive. Because she has been deaf from birth, she is able to pick up a lot through vision that other people don't.

It's amazing the sorts of things that she can pick up. When everyone else assumes that I am happy and carefree, she can tell when something is troubling me.

If you email me, perhaps I can ask my daughter some more specific questions. Keep in mind though that she is only a kid, so she might not understand it all.

My email address is the_soothing_hand@yahoo.com
