Not any more unbalanced than usual. It's just the product of the absolute trust nearly all children have for their parents, and the subsequent abuse of that trust. Those who turn to religion later in life usually do so in a similar period of child-like vulnerability.

I just don't believe some of the nonsense that appears above.
Here are the facts for you:
All religions, whether existing today or ceased to be very many years ago (think of the Greek and Roman gods - plural!) are totally man-made, inventions designed to comfort those who were seeking answers, seeking solace, yet with no understanding of the realities of life. Also generated to gain control over the populace by fear and by false promises.
Religion self-perpetuates, despite it's stupidity, with the children of religious parents being indoctrinated from a very early age and, in some pitiful cases, by being sent to religious schools, where the brainwashing continues (in addition to sexual abuse, as it turns out).
Religion, or the belief in a superior and supernatural being that has an effect on our lives, IS the result of very many years of scare tactics and lies but yet the more uneducated and simple-minded seem to NEED it to be able to cope with their miserable lives.
Any true atheist will vouch for the fact that we atheists don't need an imaginary friend in the sky, or whatever other image or concept of such an entity may be. We understand that praying is just like having a telephone conversation with someone who isn't there. Talking to oneself, which can be good but it is totally pointless if one thinks that one is talking directly to a non-existent being ... except perhaps for some self-satisfaction for the misguided bible-thumpers.
If they are happy in their beliefs, fine by me, just as long as it is not compulsory for their children - or me.
Now, if you introduce Islam into this - we are in deep trouble. Craziest and most dangerous ideals yet invented. Perhaps another topic for another day.

so you're suggesting people of faith - who beleive in something unseen are suckers?
People certainly have a reason to be cynical of organized religion these days, but i assure you there is a GOD, there is a creator and there is life after this earthly existence.
Everything else as they say is trivial and up for interpretation and requires a little effort on your part to seek and hunger after truth.

Oh, gosh, for some of the extremists, it must be.
It's human nature to fear the unknown and to feel powerless and unvalued. Religion sates that fear. It's also brainwashing of a sort, but most people of faith aren't all that crazy.

Guilt is what we always feel when we fall short of God's standard. But thank God mercy is always available. Its God's mercy that provides a balanced mind.
In 2 Timothy read the following and see if you see yourself there.
Chapter 3
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
THERE IS HOPE FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING YOU
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10
