LOL my girlfriend's cat makes a chirping dolphin type noise when she sees birds outside the window. She is an indoor cat.

And another time we were using a laser pointer with most of the lights out and I shined it into a halogen bulb on the ceiling and it made a funny reflection and she did the same noise.

Anyone else have a cat that makes this noise? :)

Hi Edward...this wonderful chirping is quite common in cats who become excited beyond belief. Here's a video of a cat that almost sounds like he/she is barking at something seen through a window: http://youtube.com/watch?v=GtX3FLLA55o

It's a frustration call. Most often this behavior in kitty buddies is presented when they spy a pray item they can't get too. This is why you normally don't hear out door or indoor/outdoor cats make this noise. They figure "Meh. I'll get around too you another time."

Now that I think about it... I've only encountered this once with one of my in/out door kitty buddies. He had captured a bird and was bringing it up too the front porch for a bit of a lazy lunch but didn't get his paws on it properly and it ended up flying a way. (Yay! Bird! You go!)

Kitty buddy sat on the porch and chirped at the sky.

And that's my two cents!

My two cats do the same thing, it's like a chatter or chirping noise. It's so cute! I think it's just a way for them to express excitement at seeing something interesting.

Cats do make a certain "clicking" noise, which could easily become chirping, like a bird. I hear this chirping noise especially from young raccoons. Which actually does sound like birds.
I think yur cat is good at IMITATING sounds.

YES!!! Our cat is also an indoor cat and he "chatters" to squirrels, birds and even bugs that are outside......it's very interesting.......it's almost like they know a 2nd language other than "meow" LOL Also, my mother's cat also "chatters" to squirrels.......it's perfectly normal, and I really think they know how to communicate with other animals and make their intentions known to them. It could be the cat's way of saying "hey, you are too close to my house" --- or, they could just be saying "howdy!" =)

All cat's will do this. It is called "Chanting". The cat is trying to get the bird, or other animal to come closer. You know why.

I have four kittens and their mother cats name is Big mama[ she was a prengant stray when I got her thats why I named her big mama] and one of her kittens says mama, it's really cute when she does this. It shocked me when she first did it, I was playing with them on the floor and she said ma ma ma ma, and was sitting by the door because she wanted to go out to see her mother.
