Potassium is essential for the proper functioning of every cell in the body. It, along with sodium, helps to maintain the electrical charge of all cell membranes. Without this charge the cell will die and so will the entire organism. Too much potassium can have the same effect, as can too much sodium. The body works continuously to maintain the proper concentration of these two ions.
