I desperately want to get into either the navy seals or force recon. Im very interested in doing direct action missions. I know the old school force recon did very little direct action and mostly did recon. But im hearing more and more how the recon marines are doing more and more raids enemy captures and so on. Is this true. I was just wondering what some of you thought about Force Recon.

O and what takes longer to get into seals or force recon, assuming you pass all the physicals screening and everything else.

Im having the same trouble bud, i been deciding for 4 years whether to go to RECON or SEALs. The truth is the only difference is ones navy and ones marines. Personally i chose the SEALs and already enlisted in the navy. SEALs are ranked number one now. But the thing that scares me the most is only 5% of those who try out actually become SEALs in the end. and like the person up there said, you have to be in TREMENDOUS physical condition, highly intelligent, self motivated person before you can even think about surviving BUD/s. Im damn sure going to give em hell and i hope you do too. GOOD LUCK

Not to dispel all the misconceptions around here but the Navy SEALs and Marine Force Recon have very little in common. SEALs do a lot more training in the water, more small unit ops (3 - 4 man teams), more weapons and explosives training and more direct combat actions. Force Recon does just that...they reconnoiter for the larger forces. They're very good at what they do but SEALs go through the same training as Recon.

Let me break down a SEAL for you in its easiest terms. Take an operator from US Army Spec Ops, US Army Rangers, US Army Delta, US Marine Force Recon, US Army or US Navy EOD, USAF Pararescue, British SAS, British Pathfinders, British SBS, Israeli Isayeret, German Kommando Spezialkraefte, German Fernspah and Norway's 7th Jaeger Company and put them in a blender and out pops a US Navy SEAL.

You have chosen some of the best groups of men and women in the armed forces as your interests. PLEASE talk to a recruiter about the training to actually become a part of these units.

Long story short, boot camp is usually a complete joke to the special training you receive. Your 6-14 weeks of boot camp, depending on which branch, doesn't seem like much when you have intense to the max and 18 hour days for over one full year.

Sure, the movies make it look like you simply get to run about, giving hand signals, shooting your rifle, and going on life threatening mission after mission that will earn you a Medal of Honor. As there is no doubt you will see at least some action at some point in a Seal career or with the Recon, you cannot expect it to be like anything you have heard down the grapevine or from friends, the media, or movies and such.

As far as what you have heard about Recon, honestly what you do while you are active and overseas directly has to do with what our country is doing at the time. There simply is no way to tell which branch's special ground forces will see more combat. It's comparing apples with oranges.

I am not sure which has more extended training and if you were to enlist tomorrow, which you may see your first mission sooner. Enlisted personnel have so many different levels of training they go through before being sent off to war it again is difficult to compare. All I can tell you is a few things to expect in Seal training from friends and other personnel I know that have finished it: It is the most brainwashing of all military training, you are actually drowned and brought back simply as a demonstration that the man next to you will save you if anything were to happen, four words: Eight Count Body Builders... thousands of them, and lastly Seal training has one of the highest drop-out rates of all military training. I have no proof of any of this and they are simply stories I have been told the past year or so.

As far as what I think of Recon Marines, the first part of that is pretty obsolete actually. All Marines in general are the same - the best of the best and most disciplined of the world's military. You earn the right to wear their uniform and will never meet someone in one that isn't proud as hell.

All in all, go and talk to your recruiter and ask as many questions as possible. Know exactly what you getting into before signing up but never lose the pride and faith in your country that I'm sure originally sparked your interest in the Armed Forces. Best of luck to you, my friend, and I hope you succeed in whatever path the military life takes you down.

God bless.

SEALS and Force Recon are essentially the same, however, there is one big difference.

Seals are NAVY seals.

Yes, I know. The Marines are a department of the Navy, but for those of you squids out who already know what im about to say, The Marines are the MENS department.

Research each branch before you decide. Talk to recruiters, they help ALOT. Trust me on that one.

"Assuming you pass all the physical screenings and everything else". This statement does include a background check and mental evals, plus you just don't sign up for the Seals or Force Recon, you enlist and as your military career progresses you are evaluated as to whether or not the expense of sending to one of these schools is worth wild. I would suggest you talk to a recruiter and go from there. Best of Luck.

First you need to get into the military before you go deciding what special forces unit you want to be in. The navy seals are hardcore and they don't play around. if you have ever watched G.I.Jane...that is about how it goes..I have seen a lot of men that were the baddest of the bad ring out. As far as the marines...they don't play either. No matter what you go into whether it be the marines or the navy ...you need to get into it before you decide what unit you're going to go into...there are special schools to get into them and it can take a whole military career just to get on the list.
