They have a hoarse sounding cough that does not go away. In a way it sounds like us when we have bronchitis. They need to go to the vet immediatley and get checked out. They need to be put on a course of antibiotics and cough tablets or cough syrup. This will not go away on its own. It will only get worse and end up infecting other dogs in the surroundings. This is an air borne infection and the best way to protect against it happening again is to have your dog vaccinated for Bordetella every 6 months. When or if you get medication for kennel cough continue it until it is completely gone, dont stop just because your dog stops coughing. You want to make sure your dog gets the full course, so it kicks the virus.

Hoarse sounding cough that doesn't go away. The dog will need to be seen by a licensed Veterinarian and treated with antibiotic to get a full and complete recovery.Don't stop the meds just because the cough gets better, go the full round so he will be taken care of correctly. Good Luck !!

Our 15 year old Pug had it, as did my 100 plus pound dog, Owen. Both of them had hoarse sounding coughs, as though they had something caught in their throat that they were trying to cough up. Owen got over it, though he is bigger and only 5 years old, but Reilly, the pug, had to get a prescription from the vet.
