When working in a Word document, I am usually able to go back into the existing text and add more text without the program overwriting what is already there. Occasionally though, I do something (I haven't a clue what) that changes this. I am then unable to add text without overwriting what is already there and screwing up everythinng following the edit. Any help out there? Please save my PC, violence is imminent!

The insert key was the guilty party. Thank you all for the quick response.

You need to press the insert key (INS) on your keyboard to toggle between insert and overwrite mode.

I've never had the problem, so I'm not sure what's causing it, however I would suggest you make certain you have your cursor positioned at the end of the document or wherever you want to add text. Also, make sure your "insert" function hasn't been activated. Normall it is activated or inactivated by just pressing the key.

If it has been activated a certain way it may cause you to overwrite existing text.

Frequent saves will help keep you from losing material, and it is always a good idea to back up your important documents.

It could be you've accidentally hit the 'insert' button, which toggles the insert (add text) and the overwrite (screwing up everything) functions. Happens to me all the time!!! If the overwrite function is on there should be a little 'ovr' somewhere on the bottom of your screen. Good luck!

You're probably using a PC where the INS or INSERT button. This causes MS WORD to switch to typeover. Hit insert again and it will change.

It is the insert key on the keyboard, probably not just in the ms word doc. Try that and see if it helps.
