What's wrong with giving a break to teachers and students? Its a win-win either way except for all or one of the following:
geeks
people that live somewhere in the roofing
teachers that LOVE giving F's
nerds
unappreciative people who hate breaks
students that have no lives
If I missed anything, so what. I'm on my break.

Students were originally given three months off from school, and sometimes more than that, because the United States was originally primarily a rural, farming country and the students were needed to help with the crops.

I have seen a number of educators try to change the school year to twelve months with several breaks of a couple of weeks but this never seems to be satisfactory. We are too accustomed to our summers off!

I'm from the midwest and the story we've been told all along is that families needed their children at home during the summer months to help tend the crops and so forth. Nowadays thats no longer an issue in most places, so what's our excuse? We should be in school year-round, that way we can compete with other countries, that way we can turn out more engineers and get American students a better grounding in science and math.

Because it is based on the semester system - teachers could go and up date their skills at college during the breaks..kids would be off during the HOT time of year and help at the farms ....however we should follow the rest of the world and get a few smaller breaks during the year - we would make better use of the buildings and the teachers + not go back to school in the fall with an empty head!

In Australia there is 6 weeks off at Christmas (our summer time) and 2 weeks after each school term... So 3 x 2 week breaks plus 6-7 weeks off at Christmas. I think 3 months is a joke. I think spreading it out is much better for the kids.

Mostly everyone knows that if you took four months off. You would have to start all over again at grade one. But, in your case. May I suggest only taking two months.

Originally, the children were needed to help bring in the crops from the farms. Now, its probably more habit than necessity.
