To solve this problem, you need to hang some bells over the door knob of the door he uses to go out. Each time you take him out to " potty" you ring the bells and open the door to take him out and if he did go "potty" give him a treat. It's the repition of ringing the bells and going out each time that he will connect to. So get busy and take a rope, string ect.. tie or sew good sounding bells onto it and it won't be long until your dog will be taking his paw and ringing those bells to tell you he's got to "potty". good luck !!

We had the same problem with our Border Collie puppy and I am backing up the bell suggestions! We did exactly that... hung them, rang each time right before opening the door and in a day she had it figured out. Worked like a charm.

I had a hard time locating the bells tho and eventually found "jingle bells" at our local Michael's craft store.

You could try to hang a bell on the door, something he can reach with his paw, or nose, to jangle and let you know he needs to go out. (kinda like a doorbell, only in reverse) Or if you are able to, put in a doggy door and you won't have to worry about it. Good luck!!

constantly go and check on him to see if he is sitting in front of the door and if u do ever see or hear him cry or wine praise him to make sure he knows that it what he has to do to be able to go outside
