"He was oppressed, he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth." Isaiah 53:7

He was silent before Herod so that He would be a witness to this prophesy and we would know that He WAS the Son of God.

Jesus was the Lamb of God. He was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the people. Once a year on the Day of Atonement the Jewish high priest would go into the temple to the Holy of Holies and make a sacrifice of a spotless lamb for the sins of the people. The priest did this every year. Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, the one who was to come to save His people. He was the spotless Lamb. There would never again be a need for any other sacrifice for sin because He satisfied the law in a way that an animal never could. He is the Passover Lamb. His blood saves His people just as the blood of the Passover lamb saved the People in Egypt.. He was fullfilling the words of the Prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

JESUS WAS SMART--HE GOT HEROD'S GOAT BY SAYING NOTHING..THAT MAKES PEOPLE MAD AS HECK WHEN YOU JUST TAKE THEIR TRASH TALK AND SMILE BACK.

The appellation "fox" which Jesus had given to Herod was apt, because Herod was crafty, a schemer. He may have been mentally disordered. His father had killed his mother and then had called her name loudly through the palace corridors for weeks. Herod was a medium? tall man with a paunch and a square? cut beard. He wore the trappings of his office ? crown, royal cape, scepter ? at all possible times. Just as his father had a haunting specter, so did Herod. This was John the Baptist. He had presented the head of John the Baptist to Salome on a dish, and now he found that he could never shut the scene from his mind. Now he was about to confront the man, who, in Herod's eyes, resembled John the Baptist.

The group went into the palace and Herod treated the prisoner as a guest. He offered chairs to all, but Jesus stood. The king was cordial; he admitted that he had heard much about Jesus. Jesus said nothing. He fixed his eyes on a spot against the wall and his mouth remained closed. Herod didn't like this. He had called his friends and his retinue into the room with a promise that they would see things from the Galilean that they had never seen before. Now Jesus not only refused to perform for the king, but also had the ill grace not to reply to him who had the power to command.

Herod became annoyed. Jesus was a disappointing fool and a fool's treatment he would receive before being sent back to Pilate. In an unreasoning anger Herod mocked and taunted Jesus. He walked around the prisoner making personal remarks about his shabby appearance, his lacerated face, dirty garments, swollen eyes. A king indeed! Pray, king of what?

It is a perennial temptation of the human heart to seek to coax signs and wonders from God, and to be exasperated with Him if He keeps silent, even though our lives give us very little title to His favors.

Now slowly read Luke 23:8-12

In John 3:16 of the Holy Bible it tells us: "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son so that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting Life."
God broght Jesus into this world for the single purpose of serving others, leading by example, and sacrificing himself (a man who was completely sinless) so that we could have a choice to be forgiven and go to heaven some day. Jesus did not say anything to King Herod cause he was following the plan God had made which was the only way for us to have any chance.

There was nothing the Lord could say that would not have come of evil in that situation. King Herod would have taken anything said the wrong way and done terrible things to Christians.

I think because silence speaks more then words. Like the phrase. Action's speaks louder then words. And that is why I think that Jesus did not say anything to King Herod.

Early Christians were inventing stories about Jesus based on the Logos concept. In the case of Jesus being silent (as well as the general crucifixion and resurrection), this was a Logos style reinterpretation of Daniel being thrown into the lion's den.

Daniel was unjustly accused - Jesus was unjustly accused. Daniel said nothing in his own defense, so Jesus said nothing in his own defense. Daniel was convicted and the punishment of death administered, the same to Jesus. Daniel was sealed up in a cave by a large rock, same with Jesus. Daniel emerged from the cave alive, the same with Jesus.

Everything that Jesus did was directed by the Holy Spirit. We can expect that Jesus knew the OT pretty well because he quoted from it so much. He must have known the following text from Isaiah 53:7, and knew that it was supposed to be fulfilled by Him. His job on this earth was to save mankind from sin, not save himself. If saving self was His objective He could easily have accomplished it. But then, how would prophecy be fulfilled?

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth

It would have pleased Herod too much because all he wanted to do was belittle him so if he was going to do that Jesus was not going to give him anything to use.
