I went to Claim Jumpers recently. Great food and atmosphere. As most of you know there is a waitress, another person who brings the dishes, and one who seats you so let's say at least 4-5 people are involved. When you give the waitress the tip, does she have to part with all the others, and is $15 a good tip on a $65 meal?

I meant does the waitress have to part or share the tips with the others who helped with the meal, and who gets more or less?

First, yes......$15 tip on a $65 bill is a great tip.....that is over 20% and 20% is standard.
When I was waiting tables, I did "tip-out" based on my entire shift sales. This was based on a percentage of my night's sales.
This "tip-out" amount, in addition to all of the other server's "tip-outs", was then divided between the bussers and the hostess and the bar tender.
Usually, the bussers, hostesses and bar tenders are paid an hourly wage that is considerably higher than the standard $2.65/hour that is paid to the waitstaff.
So, please continue to tip at 20%. This is really how your servers make their money.

I work at Chili's and we share tips with the busser and the bartender. We also tip out the Q.A. (the person who makes sure everything is right before the food comes out). On average if I make $100 in a shift, I am going to tip out $15 of that. $15 is a good tip on $65. There are a couple of rules of thumb to think of. If you are a regular table, then 20% is good. If you are complicated with lots of refills or something, then maybe add a couple of dollars. If your waitress was terrible, do 15%. Another thing to think of is never leave less then $5.00 on the table and never leave less then $2.00 per person ($1 per child). Remember, most servers only make $2 to $3 an hour, so tipping is literally how they make their money.

$15.00 is a good tip on a $65 meal, yes. The waitress will have to tip out the bussers most likely. At most places they don't tip out the hostess, but it is possible they might have to. Just depends. The waitress keeps most of the tip, and gives the bussers a small percentage. The bussers don't need a huge percentage because they are getting tipped out by several wait people.

In most restaurants there is something called "tip Share" I certain percentage of the waitress' sales is given to the hostess, bartender and the bussers. Usually its 3% of the servers total sales for the evening.
A good tip is 20% of whatever your bill is. so 20% of your $65 tab would be $13 so yes $15 is a good tip.
Those individuals who leave without tipping should know that because you did not leave any money your server now has to pay for waiting on you. Also for those individuals who leave without even paying for their food should realise that your server is responsible for paying for your meal now. You're now "screwing the establishment" you're screwing your server!!

it really depends on the restaurant. some put all the tips in a pot and divide them at the end, others keep it all, where i work i give 1% of my sales to four different people from the tips i made. I'm sure she was very very happy to see $15 for a $65 meal, 15% of $65 is about $10, $15 is obviously for $100 meal. you will be remembered next time you eat there as a good tipper and be taken care of well ;)

i think you should tip the waitress 15-20%, depending on the service. This has been standard for a long time. What you tipped is almost overtipping. i don't think the customer should be expected to figure out what each person's "cut" is in every different type of restaurant. However, you can always ask to speak to the Manager if you are concerned about tipping properly in that establishment.

I'm not in food service, but I always tell others that if you want to leave a decent tip without having to do the math...just triple what the tax on the meal was...that way you are automatically giving at least a 21% percent tip.....easy!

it depends on the restaurant some restaurants (like one I worked at required waiters to tip out thier busboy 3%, bartender 2% and hostess1% of their nightly/lunch tips)
Others like many in LA that I knew people who worked at pool their tips, waiters, foodrunners and bussers all get a cut.
And yet others only the waiter gets the tips
And yes your tip was good, 15-20% is customary for good service

No, usually wait staff don't share their tips with kitchen staff and host staff. And, yeah $15 is 23% of $65, 23% is a pretty good tip.
