I cannot answer whether or not they really spoke or whether the serpent in question was simply being used as a vessel by satan. However, if you look at todays snakes you can see an extra set of what scientists call spurs that seem to give creedence to them having been able to walk at one time.

until they ate from the tree of life
adam and eve 'communicated' with the animals in the garden
nowhere does it say that eve went into shock when the serpant spoke to her
so it appears to have been second nature for it to do so
as she seems to have been accepting
enogh to understand what it said
also
i dont know if what we call a snake
is what a serpant was then either
as up until its curse it moved in other means than crawling on its belly

Absolutely, unequivocally, no. Snakes have never had legs. The spurs someone referred to are used for mating, they are not now, nor have they ever been the remnants of legs. And I'm pretty sure only certain species of snake have them, not all.
I'm not sure if this was a serious question or not, but that's my serious answer.

adam and eve is just a story.....i have read the entire bible, i believe in God and i'm smart enough to make out the metaphors and stories in the bible. It's the people that take the bible too literal that scare me. Since bible was written by men, and perhaps translated and biased 100 times since the original copy.

Sure. But only when Elvis sang. Apparently snakes used to have feet but screwed up big time so they were made to crawl and slither. I guess they didn't take religion seriously. Let that be a warning to you.

The earth was a very different place before Adam fell and God cursed/punished man, woman, the earth and life as we knew it.

The serpent was satan - the tempter. He comes in many shapes and forms - then and now.

No of course not. They were just like today. However,an unseen person could have thrown their voice to make it appear that the snake was 'talking'.Similar to the way a ventriloquist operates today.

I believe that this is how smooth and how well Satan can lie to us, Eve was so blinded by him she didnt even freak out when a Serpent talk to her.
