Hmmm. I've always wondered this.

How come when you cry a lot and then go to sleep right afterwards, the next morning your eyes are really puffy? And why do you get such a big headache?

You can cry a lot.... wait a while..... and THEN go to sleep. And somehow that reduces the amount of puffiness you get the next morning. Why IS that??

I just never understood it. Thanks for your responses.

Never noticed this phenomena, but I would guess that when you cry for several minutes the body has a variety of physical and mental responses. The eyes may puff up as a reaction to tearing, the head may ache due to sinus swelling or just blood pressure changes which accompany emotional shifts.
If you wait a while, your body has time to recover from this stress.
That being said, I think many of us have had a good cry before falling asleep. Laying in bed trying to sleep, the mind opens up to memories and thoughts which we may guard ourselves from during the day. The process can be very cathartic, but is not the most settling experience sometimes. I have heard it is best to try not to go to sleep mad. I would guess sad is also not the best way to end the day. Hope you can find optimism in the coming day. Life is full of chances at hope.

I guess each person is different in that aspect. I'm puffy anytime I cry. Waiting awhile and going to sleep later makes absolutely no difference. Puffy is really a mild word for the way my eyes look after a good cry. :)

When you fall asleep everything slows down... kinda like if you eat right before you go to bed you gain weight.
