Have someone squeeze your hips, one hand on each side. If this person feel or hears grinding, or you hit him/her to stop the pain, you have a broken hip.

Seriously, a broken hip is pretty serious. It is the strongest bone in the body and to break it you need to have sustained a very serious blow. It would be very unusual to have JUST a broken hip - whatever caused it would have also caused, at the very least, significant bruising.

Symptoms would be: Pain, inability to stand and walk, and bear your weight on that leg and swelling in that hip area. Best test would be a simple x-rays in any emergency room.
