thinking about one for my wife as a gift, she needs a automatic trans but what type of mpg could she really get in one of these cars, what are the problems if any, i would like input from people that have owned this type of car both the diesel and gas models, she has to wait 3 years before immigration lets her come home to me, so i really wish to get her a nice car for all she has gone thru, and really don't want to buy a peace of junk for a gift, but if bugs are good it will be a yellow one, have a good day and thanks so much for the help.

With the gas models, expect around 30 mpg.

I'm not sure you make out better with a diesel. They cost a couple of grand more than the gas engines and then diesel cost around 30 cents more per gallon.

I did some calculation on this and found that it would cost me around 7 cents per mile to drive a gas VW and around 5 cents per mile with a diesel VW. It would take a LONG time to make up the difference of initial cost in buying the diesel.

The diesel engine is supposed to still be running at 250K , 300K or more. That is a plus

In contrast, my Suburban costs around 11.5 cents per mile.

All these prices were calculated with gas prices at $2.30 and diesel at $2.50. So, just do what SHE wants to do. THAT is VERY important!! Good luck. Pops

There are several reasons. 1. Diesel is much more expensive than gas and has been for awhile. 2. Older diesels were very slow, loud, and dirty. The reputation has stuck. 3. The diesel engine option is pretty expensive. 4. At various times EU and US diesel laws made the cars incompatible. Meaning cars built for Europe required expensive modifications to meet US laws making the cars money losers.

Depending on how you drive, I'd expect 27 - 30 in mixed driving for the 4 cyl non-turbo models.

Get the Diesel. The TDI gets 45 mpg or more, and if you throw a chip in there it will outrun most cars on the road.
