Personally I think it's because guys have become so irresponsible and lazy. For instance they do not think they need to be well educated and be the primary breadwinner in the family anymore. Women are more pragmatic; they realize that they have to look good on paper, get credentials, etc. etc. whereas guys are more into "whatever....I don't have to get all that schooling and **** - somehow I'll just get a good job....." I also think women are more sensitive to wanting to achieve to make their parents, etc. proud and have society/peers/friends etc. notice their achievements.... Basically a lot of guys have become big time losers that we women cannot count on anymore. This in turn gets filtered to children. Male kids are so bad these days and that's why. I also agree with the Hollywood angle. I would add MTV etc. to that too, with its propagation of the whole hip-hop thing etc. It promotes guys being utterly hopeless losers and criminals even (i.e. drugs etc.)...

To be honest I think it's about a change of attitude both towards the individual and the marriage. I think because of the society that older people lived in they had to make it work and therefore were able to better understand each other - thus last a little longer than other people.

Today people have the attitude of 'oh well divorce is an option' so it's not a problem. The attitude towards marriage has change in that people are entering it more casually now. Also I think the individual believes they can't do it and can't continue with it so why the effort and drama.

I know that my parents are verging on divorce. I don't know how mum has the resolve to put up with dad sometimes. I know that it is because she wants to help him through etc but is it worth your healths etc.

That is the point I'm getting at I guess. It just depends on how serious to take marriage and how your attitude is.

divorce rate is on the rise because of hollywood. Yes i did just blame it on hollywood. People are no longer commited to making a relationship work. Also with new entertainment technologies, people are working more to pay for their stuff. When they are not working they are using their stuff. Honestly most people are too busy these days to even be making the forever commitment. They base the decision on here and now circumstances instead of looking at their future goals and plans to see if they can live the life they want to with that person. Also many women feel pressure to say yes (they never say no in the movies), they think if the guy is asking them to get married then he is completely committed forever.

not that its a real cause, but if we look at the percent of females in the work force, females in leading positions, scores in scool and college, they are on the rise as well. take that into consideration when women typically had to be the slave to the husband either by financial or religous means, getting a divorce would be a huge disaster. nowadays women can be the sole provider in a household and be infact independant.

take a look at your parents and grandparents for instance, they typically fight no more than the average couple, except back then a man was allowed to beat his wife. but there's no way in heck that a woman would leave her husband, she would be looked down upon from her family, friends everyone. alot of people dont realize how bad things were just 30 to 40 years ago, let alone 40+.

edit: not to make it seem like the woman's fault, as it takes both parties to have a fight. but typically the females remained silent and obeyed their men, now women can talk back and have a say. hope that makes sense.

Bothe people now days have carreers so they put the job first. Also as always to many relationships start as a sex thing. The first attraction is animal " wow he she is hot " kinda thing.
People do not spend any time knowing each other first. and they are not honest with each other. I meant they want the other to like them.
I have a great woman now ...thanks to the net...I know sounds like bull....but its true...we met on the net as friends and have been very straight and up front with each other and we spent over a year before we decided to meet...its been 5 years now and we are still so much in love and talk all the time. But it is still a rare thing.
love and lust are somtimes hard to distinguish

People do not take their vows seriously. No one works at making their marriage work.. no one ever told them there will be days when you feel nothing for your spouse, or think of them as your sibling, parent, or worst enemy.. that you're always suppose to remember why you fell in love with them in the first place.. and hold tight to that.
For better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer.
(I know I have that in the wrong order..)
Maybe as youths, no one stepped in and corrected their morals.. Now, as adults, they still have that meaningless 'me me me' attitude.
Marriage, parenthood, and old age, isn't for sissies

Maybe no one invited God to their wedding..

Because people don't take their vows seriously. These days, everyone seems to go into a marriage with the idea that if it doesn't work, they can just get a divorce.
