but as soon as they are backed into a corner, they quickly retreat to cop-outs like "only God knows" and "you don't understand because you're not Christian" etc. etc.

You can't defend "faith" with logic. Why do you even try?

As a Christian, I have to agree that you can't use logic to explain faith. Faith is simply believing something you can't see- it's a decision you make- you either believe or you don't. Christians can't force you to believe what we believe. "Intellectuals" don't agree w/ our thought process, but you have to have child-like faith- accept what Jesus has said (through the Bible) as truth. It's a decision that YOU must make- I'll be glad to answer any questions you have, I'll tell you what God has done for me, but I can't (and won't) twist your arm to make you believe what I do.

Actually this is a question I have, too. Christians will go on and on about how of course their faith is rational and then when something is obviously so contradictory that they can't resolve it with their beliefs, they do use the "faith" line. It's one or the either: if your religion is truly based on faith alone, then why do you feel the need to defend it rationally? How can you even hope to try and defend it rationally if, in the end, you know it's going to come down to whether you believe or not?

I'll take it one step further, even: why is it that Christians all disagree so much on how they portray their faith and beliefs? When you look at the evolutionists/atheists on here, it's clear that, while there may be different levels of knowledge about evolution itself and about theistic religions, we all essentially say the same thing: our "beliefs" if you'd like to call them that are based on logical, factual evidence. We admit that we haven't figured out all the mysteries of how evolution worked, but we also understand that in the last three hundred years or so, mankind has made taken about a million more steps towards scientific enlightenment than what occurred for the entire previous history of humanity, and to think that we can actually trace homo sapiens back to a simple one-celled organism is amazing in itself, and it's likely that given enough time, we'll fill in all those "missing links."

Christians, on the other hand, all seem to differ. Some try to claim that their religion can be logically explained and try to do so. Others say that the biblical stories have been "proven" true (although they never offer up any of the so-called "proof"). Others say their beliefs are based on faith alone. Some of those who feel this way try to claim that this is the same as having "faith in evolution" and others don't. Some Christians claim that their faith is accepting of all people, and others completely contradict that. Some say that it actually must take more faith to believe in evolution because they can't imagine everything "falling together" and others think that Christianity takes more faith. If Christianity is such a logical and fulfilling religion, then when can none of them agree on what their faith tells them and how they should portray it? If it were so *clear* that it's the one correct religion, then why do they disagree so much, why are there so many different viewpoints?

Evolutionists and atheists and agnostics ... well, some of us may treat you with respect and others may be downright nasty, but when it comes down to the bares bones, we're all presenting you with the same facts and opinions.

Faith in Christ and logic go hand in hand. Consider that if you had a friend or co-worker who was extremely reliable and trustworthy. Wouldn't you have logical reason to believe then, in faith, that he will do what he has promised you to do - for instance if he tells you he will meet you somewhere at 3pm? In this example, would you have faith at 2:45pm that he will show up...even before the evidence is before you? Logically, if he has always previously shown up on time and been responsible in other areas, you should!! That is somewhat similar to the kind of faith we as Christians have...it is not blind faith, but faith in the living God!

No one can defend faith with logic. Faith, by it's nature, defies logic.

Had Einstein sided with faith instead of with logic he wouldn't have made so many goofs in his dynamics of Relativity.

When he saw something the defied logic, he dismissed it or found a way around it instead of going with faith.

Then along comes someone else who showed Einstein a thing or two and promptly explained why logic didn't prevail.

Einstein SHOULD have had faith in his initials conclusions!

That lack of faith made him seem less credible.

The cliche is A LEAP OF FAITH

That is because it defies logic.

Now, logically define an irrational number to me. Give me a CONCRETE and LOGICAL explaination for Pi or e

Science and math can't explain it logically, but it is, it works and that's how we get to the Moon or predict when the U.S. population will reach 400 million.

All anyone can do in trying to defend their "faith" is to try and explain in terms someone else can understand.

Now, an Alien species that reproduces by cloning cell division spawing a fully developed adult at "birth." Immediately that new being goes off and does its own thing. THe other goes off and does something else. They never pair. They never flock. They never congregate.

Now, explain the concept of LOVE to them.

There is no metaphorical basis in their intellect or language to identify with any concepts you attempt to use to explain this intangible concept.

That's how difficult it is to explain faith.

What I enjoy are the ones that say, "Unless you can prove God doesn't exist, then you MUST believe in Him!"

Somehow the "logic" escapes me. I don't have to prove a thing not to believe in God! Funny sheep.

That is true, but we know the only way an unbeliever will understand if He doesnt want to know God is to use terms they understand. Sure it doesnt always work but sometimes God uses that too.

I don't try and defend my faith. I simple answer when asked and move on. As for others would you like them to answer to your satisfaction or to their belief? Which one do you want? If you don't like the answer stop asking them and go to the source itself.
