ocasionally i will have a sharp pain in my heart, like a needle. it will only last for a second or less. But today as i was walking from the bathroom it happened again. This time it felt more like a knife and when it happened i fell to the floor and rolled around in pain for a good 5 or so seconds. after the initial pain went away i got up, but for a minute or two my heart kind of ached, like it was sore. i doubt it was a heart attack, but what was it?

I have had something similar in the past. Fortunately, when it was checked out it was just cramps. That said, it might not have been, so getting it checked out early was definitely necessary. If it is something serious, then waiting for it to get worse might mean that either it is too late, or that you lose the opportunity to intervene before some other permanent damage is done.

Might be angina.

Angina often occurs when the heart needs more blood. For example, running to catch a bus could trigger an attack of angina while walking might not. Angina may happen during exercise, strong emotions or extreme temperatures. Some people, such as those with a coronary artery spasm, may have angina when they're resting.

First of all, see a doctor.

Not knowing your age, height , weight, diet, activity level or other proclivities, it could just be stress. Any aberration/abuse in the afforementioned areas could be problematic.

Sounds like a Wake Up call, and that you Need to start taking better care of yourself.

Sometimes a rib can be out of place and feel like that. A chiropractor could tell if that were the case.

Also could be an overly tight muscle, resolved by massage or stretching.

You need to go to the ER any time you have chest pain. Especially pain so bad that it knocks you to your knees.
