Try no shampoo or brush (not unhygienic). Massage scalp w/ conditioner and rinse. Then spread conditioner outside of hair and nape of neck. Gently comb tangles out w/ fingers from under hair and rinse. Or use wide toothed comb if you can't get all the knots out. At first hair will be worse. Takes 2 to 4 weeks begin working.

If you are shampooing straight hair it could be naturally wavy w/o shampoo. Wavy and staright haired people should try water-diluted shampoo. This works sooo well. It's all from a book that the web site above is based on. Check it out! And don't become discouraged if you have curly hair!

Umm... Well if you have striaght hair it may not matter. I know from experience that this works. I read the book and the website and most shampoos even if they say they are moisturizing use harsh detergents (sulfate things). I've heard brushing does distribute oil to all parts of your hair but my hair is better after not brushing even when wet and it's possitively atrocious if I brush it while dry. I hadn't worn my hair down from 2nd to 8th grade. It was really frustrating but then I found this!

sodium (usually 2nd or 3rd ingrediant) in shampoo is a salt, which is used basically just to make lather (and will strip color faster than youd like to think), so you are correct here. plenty of companies manke non sodium gentle shampoos, such as Pureology. try organic produts, like aveda, or as mentioned pureology (this is a vegan company, but still sodium free).
The no shampoo thing does work for some, but honestly i couldnt bring myself to do it.

that is complete and utter BS...shampoo, if your using the right kind, will not dry out your hair...i can use just shampoo and my hair feels great without a conditioner...i don't know where you got your info but its wrong and don't announce it to the world...shampoo is meant to degrease your hair from its natural oils...natural oils are good but too much, then your hair looks greasy...shampooing every day is bad...every other day is better for you..
