Is there a way I can train my dog (white shepard) to do the commands that the K-9 unit uses? I want her to protect my family in case of emergencies, opposed to owning a gun. I have children in the house and would rather not own a gun. But she is 8 months old, is it too late to teach her these commands and where can i find a manual or techniques to teach her these things?

Thank you very much!!

I didn't realize that they used aggression. I am just concerned being a single mom, she will listen to us and she loves us, but she is just so playful (which is good) that I dont know if in the situation she would protect us or lick them to death, God forbid I was broke in on.

I have a full breed, long hair shepherd myself. Have only trained her to sit, stay, go up, or down the stairs at home, get in the car, etc. She was bred for intelligence, and companionship skills. I got her from Holmes Valley Shepherds in Florida.

That pooch needs NO training to defend us! Anyone walks on the sidewalk in the middle of the night, she hears it and barks them away. She recognizes the scent of dogs just being walked, 60 feet from our front door, when she is awakened from her nap and barks! She will follow us everywhere around the house, and walk right in front of us. It is her strong, herding instinct. She looks back to see we are still following her. She can be eating her meal, you get out of sight, she looks for you and locates you, makes sure you're in the house, and then goes back to eat. And for all her show of defense, she is a very sweet dog, even with strangers. She is trusting. ALL THAT on instinct, alone!

Your puppy will get there, as she identifies the members of the family as her pack, and will give her life for her pack. Cocoa was like that too, as a puppy

German Shepards are great dogs for protection; however, they can be a serious liability if one is trained to become aggressive on command. Your dog should already be protective of the family. I would suggest obedience work which can be found in any library. Again, I would not suggest that you work on the dog's aggression. Our department pays heavy insurance premiums to protect us and the community.

there is a way but you can't be taught to do it in an answer. There are professional dog handling schools who can teach you. If you expect to leave the dog at home it should be trained to respond to the commands of your wife and children as well.
