If you mean off duty it really depends on the county, not the state. If the sheriff hires you as a deputy in corrections, sends you to both the police and corrections academy so that you are POST certified as a peace officer you can carry off duty. Within the jail proper (among the population) no one has weapons on a regular basis. Even the special squads called in for a large disturbance do not carry firearms. Those outside of the jail acting as perimeter guards or separated from the inmates do usually carry firearms, rifles and shotguns, not handguns.

In the states where I have worked all correctional officers have power of arrest on state property, and can be allowed power of arrest off of state property by governor order. IE Georgia used correctional officers for police and secuirty during the olympics
And all of them can carry a weapon while on duty, they are POST certiried and pass weapons training
