My girlfriend has been losing a TON of weight over the past 6-8 months (she's now 5'7" and 106lbs). They haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with her, until a couple of days ago. They checked her gallbladder and said it was not functioning at all. They did a similar test a couple of months ago, but they said they found no stones, so the test was stopped. She's having her gallbladder removed tomorrow. Her friends and I have tried to suggest to her that she has an eating disorder (bulimia and anorexia run in her family). I thought the gallbladder helped digest fatty foods, but she swears that anything she eats makes her vomit or gives her diarrhea, to the point that she's lost all this weight. Does any of this 'add up' to anyone out there, or do you think she has gallbladder problems with a side of bulimia???

Vomiting and diarrhea are absolutely consistent with gallbladder dysfunction. The question that appears unanswered here is WHY is she having this problem? Does she have Celiac Disease (gluten sensitive enteropathy) or another underlying condition that is causing the gallbladder problem? If she has an underlying condition, removing the gallbladder will only temporarily help; eventually other symptoms develop.

Before having surgery, be sure to ask the doc WHY the gallbladder isn't working? If the doc 'doesn't know', it may be appropriate to get a second, third, and more opinions.

Best wishes and good luck.

Look, this answer is not on a professional capacity. But I had a situation with gall bladder; I brought a gall bladder situation ON myself by stopping eating fats; like I didn't butter my bread, etc. for a couple of months. Then after about 2 months of not eating fats at all practically, I suddenly developed terrible pain in the gall bladder area. I got really sick and with temperatures etc. I looked up a book called Let's Get Well and found out that you NEED some fats as they are what trigger the release of digestive enzymes!!! OMG so I had given myself a gall bladder problem from wanting to lose weight! Now how this relates I am not sure; but sounds to me like yr girl has something else going on; I didn't particularly lose weight btw; I just developed a gall problem
If you are with her; do you notice any weird thing with her eating habits??
Over to you to investigate and good luck.

It's worth checking in to. An eating disorder sounds more like it. My sister had gallbladder problems and eventually had it removed. She is a heavy person by the way, and still is. I never heard of gallbladder problems making you lose weight. She is pretty thin for her height. It's such a sensitive subject, if she does have an eating disorder, it might be hard to prove. Best of luck to you, I hope you find out soon.

She has what is called in medicine 'dysfunctional gallbladder' that is the the gall bladder is not doing its job of secreting bile when she eats food thus causing her nausea & vomiting and sometimes abdominal pain. Its diagnosed by doing HIDA scan of liver and gall blader. The treatment is removal of nonfunctioning gall blader. She should feel much better after that and should be able to gain weight. But if she still keeps on loosing weight then she might have an eating disorder. Please update us of her condition after surgery. Good luck.

I have worked for 4 yrs as a surgical RN, and I think your friend needs some serious help. I think she is probably bulimic.
We have taken care of a ton of people with gall bladder problems, and the gall bladder usually goes bad after a bunch of weight is lost for whatever reason, not the cause of weight loss.

She shouldn't go for the operation without a second opinion. I think she might be in a state of denial about her eating disorder. She needs help.

You're normally going to die besides, when you consider that you are binging and purging, that's gradual suicide. Kills your digestive tract. Sorry. You want a psychologist in case you relatively desire to are living. Why could you provide a crap approximately part results whilst you are already within the procedure of killing your self?
