Does having this surgery impair your ability to have children in the future?

I know during a pregnancy you have to be able to provide nutrition for the fetus and yourself as well,

but having this surgery whic is restrictive as well as malabsorptive, does this rule out having a child in the future?

I had a gastric bypass two years ago. I know a dozen or so women who went through this and then went on to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.

We were told prior to surgery that we should NOT get pregnant within the first 18 months after surgery. I do know women who accidentally did just that...about six months post-op. This is partly because fertility increases dramatically as one gets healthy after surgery. We were told that they simply don't know enough about the nutrient needs and absorption issues of weight loss surgery patients during pregnancy. I believe the thinking is that you need to load up on the proper nutritional supplements even more than a "normal" pregnant woman does.

None of the women I know of who had the earlier post-op pregnancies had any problems. Your surgeon or weight loss surgery program could give you more details about this though.

Good luck! This was a great decision for me and I hope you have the same experience.

Gastric Bypass surgery doesn't affect your abiblity to have children.
During even a pregancy by a woman who has never had any surgery of any kind prenatal vitamins are always prescribed to help insure that the fetus/infant gets exactlly what it needs during development.
If and when you get pregnant your Dr will see your Bypass scar and will ask about it at which time you can tell them and they will know just what to do for you and an unborn child that you might be carrying.

I had a friend who had the surgery, she had 2 happy, healthy babies.

Pre-natal dr. visits are a must... and take your vitamins!
