By definition I would say they are punishment enforcement officers.
Some may have aspirations of becoming a patrol officer. In my county, for instance, officers must work 2 years in the county jail before even being considered by the sheriff for patrol duty. I'm a muni so it never affected me. All in all I consider jailers and dispatchers to be 2 of the more difficult jobs in the law enforcement machine. I'd rather be on patrol than doing either fo those 2 jobs.

They are brave great heros who are not given any respect.
Yes they are law enforcement people who are POST certified as correctional law enforcement personell.
And they are often braver than all others since they walk into a room full of killers and the such without any weapons on a daily basis

COs are very poorly paid, particularly in comparison to cops. It's almost an entry level job. Typically there is huge turnover every year, and when times are good, there are job openings that chronically go unfilled.
Truth to tell, the job is by definition brutalizing, in that one has to become brutal just to deal with the brutal people under your supervision. And the fact that people regularly apply for these jobs is scary, in that you wonder what they are looking forward to.
I'm not badmouthing COs. I support paying them much more money, insisist on far better training, and all-in-all, better prison infrastructure.
Still, why would one want to be a gaoler?

They are law enforcement officers. They do a tough and thankless job. The reason some think they are wannabe's is because the standards aren't as high to be Correctional officers.

I think they are a different breed. COs only deal with "bad" guys whereas cops need to deal with helping women having babys and tfraffic accidents and, at the other extreme, stopping crimes where they might very well be killed.
COs need to deal with violence and strongarm tactics almost on a daily basis and I just don't see the reward of dealing with the same people every day and knowing, if they get the chance, you will be clobbered by someone who doesn't care if he dies.
I think they are different types of people.

I give them the full respect I do other cops. I would not want to do their crappy job of being trapped in a concrete box with the worst of society.
Many COs I know are going to school to be LE, and they make great cops when they get done, they already know the problem causers:)
