Hey I do it and many people do as well. But you know, most of the communication is in body language, so you can say whole lot by just saying hey. So if you mean well and you show it, no matter what words you say, it's should come out right.

way it is okay to say hey to people. The say hi you say hey there is nothin wrong with that. I say hey to all my friends

No!
1) It's informal- use "Good morning, afternoon, or evening.
2) And it's rude- when calling out to people use their names
not "Hey," that is why parents give their children names right.
