My brother is 20, and he has already gotten to fly to Florida to shoot a wedding for someone he met at college. So, i guess traveling for free is a benefit. You also get to have fun with it, taking pictures of whatever interests you. go to flickr.com/photos/justintosh to see his work

To begin you can break down photography careers into 3 main categories, each of which is subdivided into sepparate categories. The three primary fields are fine art, commercial, and photojournalism (you could even include scientific photography for that matter, but thats a whole different ballpark). Each of these fields are quite unique, carrying along with them their own protocols and such. For example a photojournalist can sometimes cross over into the realm of fine art or vice versa.
Commercial photography is generally what most people consider when they think about a career in photography. The gamut is undoubtedly the most diverse in the photography field and can range from anything to: product photography, food photography, portrait photography, porn photography, wedding photography, papparazzi.
The benefits of being a commercial photographer are pretty much just the same as any other job. Most of us do photography because it is something we love, and not somethign that we were forced into or promoted to unwillingly. We have lots of responsibility, perhaps more than most corporate careers because most of us do not have the benefit of having a company look after our well being and finances: health insurance, retirement, payed vacations etc... When you work freelance which many of us do, it may sound like free vacation, but to be successful, it takes a lot of determination, and hard work. The photography world is small and reputation is everything, and if you build a reputation on being late, unscrupulous, lazy etc, then you have signed your own death certificate. It is true that many of us do travel more than perhaps a desk clerk or corporate accountant, but it is work, its not for pleasure, and taking a photo isnt as easy as one would imagine. Many of us just don't have the free will to take pictures of what we want, we often times work closely with an art director, which have very specific ideas of what they want vs. what we want. Anyhow, just use your imagintion, though photographers typically love the work they do, in the end it is a job, and has lots of down sides. The worse part is that if your hobby was photography before starting a photo career, chances are you have lost that, because when vacation comes, who wants to take their work with them, i.e. their camera. Though I dont fit into that category, I can tell you that sometimes it can be a disaster to turn your passion into a carreer, because in the end you may have well destroyed that passion. Personally I think you should write about taxidermy instead of photography, far more interesting and exciting. Here is my friends website, enjoy http://www.spaternite.com/
