Try using the Windows device manager to diagnose and hopefully fix the problem. Shut down any running programs so you're at the desktop. Click start > control panel > system > hardware tab > device manager. A tree-like list will display with various hardware categories. You can open a branch by clicking on the plus sign, close it by clicking on the minus sign. Each device will have an icon next to it. A yellow icon with black exclamation mark = device has a problem. White icon with a blue letter i = device was configured manually. And a red X = device missing or disabled.

Double click the device in question and you'll see the device's properties dialog box. In the general tab, the device status group gives a description of the problem. Each properties dialog box has several tabs that let you manipulate various device settings. The tabs vary based on the device but you'll usually see the following:

General: Basic data about the device, whether it's working or not, and what the problem might be. Also lets you enable the device (choose Use This Device) or disable (choose Do Not use).
Properties: displays controls for working with device settings.
Driver: lets you roll back the driver or update it
Resources: resources used by the device

There are 3 things you can do with a device driver, all of which take place in the driver tab of the device's properties dialog box:
1. Update driver to newer version
2. Roll back a driver to a previous version
3. Uninstall the driver. Sometimes necessary before installing the newest version.

Before updating you need to get the most current driver from the manufacturer. Make sure the driver is for your specific make and model device AND it's compatible with your current operating system. Download the driver file and save to your desktop. After it's downloaded, right click and use the option to scan for viruses (assuming you have a current AV program on your comp.) Once it's scanned, open the file. If it's compressed (zipped) double click and then extract all files to an empty folder you create. If it's an executable file (.exe) it will probably ask where you want the files to go. Again, specify an empty folder.

To update the driver:
1. In the device properties dialog box click the driver tab's update driver button. Hardware update wizard appears
2. Activate install from a list or specific location and click next
3. Activate the include this location in the search check box and then use the text box to enter the location of the extracted file (or click browse to find the folder), click next
4. If you see a hardware installation dialog box warning you the hardware has not passed Windoes logo testing, click continue anyway
5. When the wizard says the driver is installed, click finish.

If your updated driver is one that Windows doesn't trust, it creates a restore point if you need to do a system restore. Hope some of this helps

You don't mention the model of your cam so I can't help you more than giving you the link to sony digital camcorders support (here you can find drivers too):

Good luck :)
