I just got a cat from a friend of mine that had to move and she couldn't take him with her. Tweek (the cat) is already very anti social even for a cat but since he's been here all he does is hide in a few different places. He is eating but he will not come out when Im around. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know how old the cat is but if mature it could take a while. It is a good thing you did taking in your friends pet. First if you have any of his old stuff that maybe your friend gave you. Like his toys, a blanket etc. put them in one room where the cat can have easy access to them. If she doesn't have any toys get some. Also have your friend send you a shirt or some piece of clothing that she doesn't need anymore and make sure she wares it for a few days. The sent of Tweek's old owner may help. Put the shirt some where near you but yet fare enough away that the Tweek will feel comfortable. She (I'm guessing) may come out to Lay on it. You can get her favorite toy out try to play with her. Try a toy with feathers on it or a string they like that. You can also just ignore her and sooner or later she will come around as cat are very curious animals. You can get a book at the library on cat behavior that may help. Or you can talk to a Vet about it too...Best of luck with Tweak...

Sit quietly near his food or litter box and read a book or something quiet. Eventually he will come out. Slowly reach your hand down but not out at him. Let him come to you and smell your hand. If you reach to pet him, he probably will run. Just let him smell you a little here and there and then one day he'll come around. He's just nervous in his new surroundings. Eventually he'll realize you won't hurt him after he sees you as the one to feed him every day. Cats have a lot of respect for the person who feeds them.
Are you sure he wasn't abused at your friend's house?

Oh BTW nice name for this cat. Tweek. It fits him, doesn't it?

The one major thing that will help, is to get him neutered if it's a male or spayed if it's a female. That will calm them down and stop alot of the anti social behavior. Also, think like the cat. He's not with his family anymore, he's in a new environment, new food, new people, new litter box, new everything. It's scary for him. I would though, take him to the vet for a once over and then make an appt to get him fixed.

Sometimes it helps if you get down on their level - try laying down on the floor near the cat, reach your hand out and lay it close to him. It is very important - since he's not been around you long and is obviously shy, to not look him in the eye, especially if it is an older cat - it is intimmidating. Let him take his time, you may have to do it for a couple weeks, until he is used to you and feels comfortable enough to get a little closer. Then you may notice him to sit out, instead of in the corner and hopefully, sooner or later, he will seek your affection. Let me know

Give him time to get used to his new surroundings. Perhaps keeping him in only one room will be less intimidating for him than allowing him free reign of the entire house. In addition, if he is very anxious, there is a product called Rescue Remedy which may help to relax him. It is a human product sold in health food stores.

Give him time to get accuainted to his new surroundings, I suggest you keep him in your room so he'll get used to you, pet him a lot cuz they love that and when you call him try in a sweet voice, play with him with toys that have feathers, they go nuts with those, and when you feed him show him a bag of treats and offer him with your hand so he'll feel more comfortable around you. Hope your new cat will come around, good luck ;) :-)
