By traditional mission, the "Sapper" or Combat Engineer is responsible for deploying, marking and reporting "friendly" mine fields. He is also, responsible for clearing or removing "enemy" minefields and obstructions. The term EOD Technician refers to "Explosive Ordnance Disposal", they are responsible for the safe removal or detonation of explosive ordnance, either friendly or enemy. You friend is probably going in to be a SAPPER.
