Honestly I would not use a rectal thermometer on a 11 year old.
They are too old and it's an invasion that may make the child feel uncomfortable.
There are other methods to take the temperature effectively. For i.e using the ear thermometer.
An 11 year old should not go through this. There's absolutely no reason why.

As weird or abnormal as it may seem to us these days, taking a rectal temperature is still the most accurate way of measuring ones temperature. I would agree that one of the more generally accepted alternatives to the rectal thermometer is the aural (ear) thermometer and using the one under the arm. There is nothing inappropriate about a doctor using a rectal thermometer on anyone of any age. No, its not comfortable. No, its not dignified. But is NOT abuse. Those that think that immature need to grow up.

I think 11 is too old to be refusing a mouth thermometer.... it's not like a shot... it's just a thermometer. So in that case, I guess it's ok. If it was the doctor's first choice without trying a mouth thermometer, that would not be normal, because 11 years is way too old for that.

I don't think so, but did the doctor do it at his or her office or was it advice given on the phone. If it was in the office I would seriously look into that doctor because with the new thermometers rarely is a rectal one still being used. Usually it is in the ear, under the armpit or ones that are simply pressed to the forehead. You can get most of these relatively inexpensively at a local drugstore.

I have an 11 year old son and I use an ear thermometer on him. I would say no it definitely is not normal to use a rectal thermometer on an 11 year old.

Tell the poor girl she either gets it in her mouth or her butt. I think she'll choose the first option. No I don't think it's normal and it's a bit creepy. She's beginning puberty and you have no right to pull down her pants like she is 2 and shove a thermometer up her butt. I won't even do a rectal temp on my 3 week old.

Not at all. If the child refused to have her temp taken orally, the Dr. had the alternatives of using an ear thermometer or taking it under her arm. I would ask for another peditrician in the practice next time you go (same if it was in the ER) and file a complaint with whomever the manager of the practice or hospital is.

I would in no way use the rectal thermometer. I would probably use the one for the ear or you can even put it under the arm. I think that at 11 that can be very embarrassing and traumatizing.

No, it's not. It's completely unnecessary and extremely humiliating for a kid that age. Use an oral thermometer or an ear canal thermometer. Rectal thermometers have fallen out of use nearly entirely for all age groups.

No rectal thermometers are only used for babies because they cant take it in their mouths. 11 year olds unless they have some sort of handy cap should take it in the mouth so its not normal.
