Other respondents have, I think, alluded to this...the texts of the Bible are, first and foremost, faith statements -- works of theology -- not works of history or journalism as we understand them. As has been noted, there's very little corroborating historical evidence for much of the narratives in the first books of the Bible -- the Abrahamic stories, the Exodus story, etc. That doesn't mean that they are not true in a theological sense, or that they don't sometimes have a basis in actual historical events...it just means that it's a mistake to read them the way you'd read, say, an article in Newsweek, or a transcript of a CNN report.

Mmmmm...probably not, but it is an account of the Jews and their conquests and experiences over hundreds of years and it ended up very much embellished along the way.

BTW - you need to watch Discovery ( or it may have been TLC) for this show on the 10 Plagues and how they could have been possible. It turns out that they can be scientifically explained to an amazing degree. It could have started with a red organism that sometimes infests rivers and then it forced great numbers of frogs out of the river 9 one of the plagues) which set off another chain of events that coincide with the plagues the Bible describes. It is very possible the plagues, a less embellished version, did happen.

This sums up some of the points of it:

we dont? and we don't have evidence on any forty year migration from Egypt to the Israel, and no evidence of moses, Abraham, and many others for that matter. What helps us with the dates are people like king Solomon which we do have evidence of. all we can do is try to put the pieces together from the evidence we have and find out about what year it was done. What does that have to do with you're question. scholars believe that the Hebrew bible was orally written as far as 900BC but the final form was achieved around 200 BC. So i guess to answer your question, it could have been "invented" much earlier than what it says... but I'm pretty sure the bible doesn't say when it was created...some scholars believe that Judaism came from Zoroastrianism as well because they have a lot of the same beliefs...hope this helps haha

learning about religions is fun... you have to apprieciate them and be open to other's beliefs, even if they sound stupid.

The bible was "invented" by King James himself. Put his best scholars to work to make one book from many writings. He also had them word it in a manner that best suited his needs, control, blind control.

How do you control a bunch of bottom feeders? Fill them with the fear of God.

I've heard stories. Ones like the story of Samson just so happens to be a very similar story of another people. (The names have changed to protect the innocent.) If the story of Mosses is true then Ramses (I) was his step brother. Egyptians kept good records and Ramses lived some 80 years and fathered many kids. Surely there must exist records that verify the events that took place during the story of Mosses.

Actually we do have record of the plagues. They have been scientifically explained as well. I'm guessing the stories about it were written much later to fit the events.

Pharoah having recorded the 10 plagues would be akin to having Hitler making sure his propaganda machine would jot down everything about the Halocaust. It was not good press.

Besides the reverence of the Jews for written history made them go out of their way to record as much as possible

The Bible was written by men under the guiding hand of God's Holy Spirit. It was not invented.

The bible wasn't invented, it was stories which were told to others over the years and later put down on paper.
Much of early records were often rewritten to conform to what the church was in favor of at the time. Example, they purposely left out Jc's sister who was the one who was the first missionary to carry his message and they made Mary Magdeline into a prostitute when she wasn't etc.

No, but there is an historical account of the plagues in Egypt.

The majority of the bible is simply stories from earlier religions re-hashed to suit christians.

The rest has even less grounding in fact.
