i used microsoft's key update tool to update my windows xp product key but i was unable to update my product key . it gives error [0x80004001]. it tells that "the application was unable to update the required system file to complete the operation because usupported version of file was found or it was missing".please help me.

Try to use emule, Limewire or torrents. Search for the product key you need and download it.

You need to do a reinstallation. (product key update tool) while useful for most cases, does include a file-scan that limits its use if certain core files are modified/missing. While this isn't ideal, and I can definitely understand your position against not wanting to do a reinstallation, the product key update tool won't be able to successfully switch your system over with these core errors.

You can't update your Windows XP unless other wise it is a genuine copy.First check it.Have good luck.

try using this CD key:
X4682-4BKMH-M4MRW-MY32H-FC8BD

It works for Without Service pack version as well as Service Pack2 versions too
