Ace is the only thing your vet will probably give you. Keatmine is a CONTROLLED substance and would NOT be given out.

If you know there's going to be fireworks keep your dog inside so it can't bolt & get lost outside. Also "Rescue Remedy" is a herbal preparation that can keep people calm & because it's herbal it's safe for dogs too - you can put a few drops in the drinking water or just rub it directly onto the skin as it will get absorbed. If your dog is still scared after that then I would recommend you seeing the vet before the fireworks & telling them that you've tried other things but your dog is really really scared & if they have any suggestions. You will probably be given a sedative to give to your dog for such times.

I have a better idea, and in the long run a much better one, no dog is too old to be trained.
Have a big bag of treats for your dog (You can pick big bags up for a couple of quid in pets at home or wilkinson or somewhere) and every time a firework goes off, you give the dog a treat. It will only take a week or so (and lets face it, fireworks will clearly be going off between now and christmas!!)
and the dog will soon associate them with good things
gradually phase out the treat, and stroke instead, then phase out the stroke, and hey presto, your dog will no longer be afraid of them!

Best go to the vets and see what he can give you for your dog, know how you feel my old golden retriever is petrified of fireworks and I have spend most of this last two weeks sat up cuddling her during the night because the idiots round here seem to think its fun letting them off at all hours of the day and night, I just turn the telly up or put some music on for my dog, I believe that guide dogs for the blind have a CD that you can buy to train your dog about not been afraid of firework and other noises, maybe you could look on their website or ring them, its in their dogalog Christmas catalogue and Pets at Home do some herbal drops you put in your dogs water bowl that help calm them down too, going for some myself tomorrow, not fair on dogs is it this noise.

A very good natural solution is called "Rescue Remedy" by Bach.
You can give it directly or add it to their water the day of the event and then give a little extra dose a night fall.
Anymore You can get it at most drug stores in the vitamin section and I'm starting to see it in some pet stores and pet catalogs. (Dr. Smith & Foster for one)
the packaging is small in a yellow box and is easily overlooked, so you may need to ask. A small bottle averages around $10.00. I use to live in California and now texas and have seen it in both places.
I've used on horses, cats and dogs for years, even on myself when stressed out.

I use to work for a (reputable) Golden breeder. One of her males was terrified of thunder storms. The owner was real big on all natural products.
She use to give him a 500mg tablet of Calcium about 1/2 hour before it would storm and he would stay nice and calm. She said it was a natural tranquilizer. She swore by the stuff.
I know a few other people who have used it and said it worked. I would assume for smaller dogs, the mg would be less.
Try looking up natural/holistic remedys for dogs with anxiety and see what comes up.
I myself am not a big fan of using that ACE stuff the vet hands out. You have to be careful with that.

See your vet
My 15 year old goes throough windows with thunderstorms of fireworks. Desensitization, giving her a den or anything else did not work. Ace works a treat

There are strong natural sedatives available, you can get them from vets and large pet stores. Best thing to do is not make a fuss or your dog will think there is a reason to be scared.

I'd ask your vet, you don't want to give your dog something that might make it Ill, or worse even!
Failing that close the curtains and ut the tv on a bit louder than normal and pay them lots of attention
