Do a search and advertise on the Internet's free classified sites.
There are tons of them that are free and many have local classifieds included.

Depends upon your market, and your thing. What do you want to advertise? How much time to do you have? If you're selling a printer or a mini-fridge, you can post them at UCSF on the board(s). If you're selling a service (bookkeeping or something), you could also post on boards around town or work on increasing your web presence. Just depends on what your "thing" is and what your resources (time, energy, who do you know) are.
