If the sequence you descried is: put key in, all looks good - try to start - engine cranks but does not fire - stop trying to start - check engine light goes on - try to start again and it fires. Your computer might to be working fine.

ODB II computers have what's called a limp home mode. If the ECU detects a problem with a sensor or something it changes engine settings to a safe programmed baseline. When in this mode the engine runs OK but usually milage suffers. Go to a mechanic and have the codes read. There's even a code for faulty ECU.

Many auto parts stores, Autozone in particular, will check out your engine codes when the light comes on. Follow the directions for curing the problem by what codes are displayed. If it is a computer fault, and not an engine fault, the computer will have to be replaced. Make sure to get one with the same part number on the computer, or it will not work.
If your vehicle has a digital odometer, you will have to take it to a Chrysler dealer to have is set up, because the mileage info for your vehicle is in the computer.

is it fuel injected ? if so what might be happening is the fuel pump relay is not working correctly so as a back up it is using the oil pressure sensor ,when it gets a oil pressure reading it will allow the fuel pump to turn on ,i have seen it on a couple of gm cars .as for your computer being bad take it to autozone (who i really do hate but ) they will scan it for codes if it is bad it will code out the problem and you can then look up the codes in the servive manual .and it might help you find your problem
