My two collie/husky mixes got in a fight and the one got bit on the top of her head and she has a hole there now about the size of a kidney bean and I can see her skull through it!!! It's not bleeding and it doesn't seem to bother her. Will she be alright til tomorrow when I can get her in to my vet? They're all closed now and I left messages but no one's called back yet. HELP!!

We did put peroxide on it, and they are up to date on their shots so not worried about rabies; it's just freaking me out cuz I can SEE HER SKULL!! She's not pawing at it or anything. They are usually pretty good together but for some reason about once every six months or so they just seem to get into it for no reason. This is the first time either has gotten anything more than a sctratch.

Both females, but both fixed; one is 8 and the one that got bit is 15 but you'd never know it--she runs circles around the younger one! And we only have 3 vets in our town and none are open. I'm sure it looks worse than it actually is--it's just that it's my baby!! My baby has an owie :9

Thank you all so much for your answers--I'd love to choose all of them as best answers! I will definitely get her in first thing tomorrow though. :)

Personally I say leave it alone. Don't do anything do it that could cause more damage. Do you have a sterille guaze pad and an ace bandage around? Cover the wound with the gauze pad and then lightly wrap the ace bandage over the gauze pad to prevent it from coming off. This will help keep the wound as clean as possible until tomorrow.

DON'T give the dog anything for pain or put any type of cream on the area.

Female to female aggression is more common that male/female aggression. Anything can trigger it, but the most common causes are food, toys, treat, bones, and your attention.

Make sure they are not left alone unsupervised. This way, a fight won't be able to escalate and leave you with dying or very injured dogs. I suggest crating them separately, or at least keeping them in separate rooms while you are not home.

Keep an eye out and see if you can figure out what triggers it and remove the trigger.

Your dog should be fine until tomorrow but get her into the vet first thing in the morning, even if you just walk in.

I have had a nasty dog fight to break up, so I know the nervousness and concern a nasty looking injury can make you feel.

It doesn't sound too bad.
Clean it (I recommend hydrogen peroxide) and put some antibiotic ointment on it. If there's a loose flap, put it down over the hole, but don't get hair in the wound. If you want, you can cut off some hair around the wound.
The only thing is, if you wait til tomorrow, they won't be able to put in stitches because the wound will already be contaminated, and if they sew it shut, it could abscess. But then, from your description I don't know whether stitches would even help.
It's a small wound, not bleeding, and head wounds heal very quickly.

Oh my goodness! I would be freaking out too! There's an emergency vet that's open during evening hours when regular vet's offices are closed in my town... maybe you have one too. I would check the yellow pages and see if you can get your baby to be seen tonight, you never know what could happen while you're sleeping... the other dog could bite her again and make it worse, or she could start scratching and make it worse. Just a warning, if you do get lucky enough to find an all night vet, they're gonna be expensive. Good Luck!

I adopted an Akita last year with a wound on his head three inches in diameter and could easily see his skull as well. I really feel for you. Your dog should be fine overnight as long as he/she doesn't scratch at it. Keep up the peroxide until you can get in to see the vet. Is there enough skin to sew? Just curious ... Either way, your baby will be ok ...

do not use peroxide dogs are different to people that will irritate it, call the vets and they will have referral number for emergencies and the reason they were fighting was dominance like wolves in the wild one is always incharge. clean t with a clean cloth and water till you reach help also try 411 and ask for animal emergecies.

Make sure to wash it out. Did you know soap can kill the rabies virus? Then try to keep her from scratching it. Maybe crate her or put her in a small confinded space to keep her from making it worse!

Peroxide is fine to use only once. It will kill bad as well as good tissue. Do put antibiotic salve on it and try to push the skin back together is she will let you. Keep putting antibiotic salve on it.

are either of your dogs females in heat? that used to seem to bring out that sort of behavior in our unaltered females.
also, not popular, but most of those wounds heal with very little intervention by us. But it never hurts to ask your vet, a stitch or two might give you peace of mind- also ask his/her opinion on their aggressive behavior.
good luck!
