Why shouldn't you?
Give it a go & do it.
You might regret it if you don't.
It could be a very good relationship, a few steps away from each others house.
The thing is, he likes you, but do you like him?
Never go into a relationship unsure of your feelings.
If you unsure, put it off for awhile and take a moment to really think it through.
As for the friendship, it will always be there, if there is the unfortunate event of a break up, ensure that feelings towards each other stay positive & try to keep the friendship.

why not? this is an easy question if he hasn't even asked you out yet!
but the thing is, if you decide to go out with him, there's no turning back. your friendship is gone once you go on to the next step. THAT'S what you have to lose, in response to those people who'ev answered asking "what have you got to lose?"
