I got a puppy yesterday. She is a lab mix around 12 weeks old or so. When i picked her out she was playful and all, now that I am home she has not shown any signs of that. She had lived outside since birth, but i am keepin her indoors. She is pretty much staying in a corner or behind my couch. Any ideas on how i can get her to not be so scared??

The kind of stress on a puppy when it gets its environment changed may cause her to withdraw a bit. As she becomes comfortable in her environment, she'll become more curious and playful. Keep this in mind also as she grows up and make sure that you socialize her by taking her to new and strange places and make sure she has a good experience. That way she'll become more comfortable in those environments and with change. Home Depot in many places still allows dogs, as do most pet stores. Also dog parks can be good, but make sure she doesn't get beat up or hurt or even startled by a stranger, then she may become scared of those places.

Just be kind to her and patient, don't yell at her, etc. Make sure she has plenty of food and water and a "safe" place to sleep--like a cardboard box with some old towels or blankets if you don't want to spend money on a bed or crate. Though Target has some nice beds that aren't too expensive. Talk baby talk to her, get her a squeaky toy or two and just give her a few days to get used to her new home. Get her used to a harness and leash asap and take her for a walk. Dogs need a job, and her's can be a walk, or playing fetch or Frisbee every day. Treats are good, too. Good luck.

The only ways you can actually get her not to be so scared is by leaving her to get used to living in a house first then buy some toys for her and play with her very often dont ignore her.

She misses her old home. Talk to her and offer her treats. Get her out of the corner and pet her. I like to put a leish on a new dog and fasten it to my belt, when I'm around the house, to help form a close bond. That's when I'm not actually playing with her or feeding her.

I have a 6 month old german shepperd and when I got her at 2 months , all she did was eat, sleep and ****. Puppies are not that uncommon from humans, they sleep alot more earlier in life. Im sure in a few short weeks your puppy will be so active and hyper you wont know how to keep her entertained.

She is just very scared. Animals have a hard time with change. You need to be very patient and let her come to you as she becomes more comfortable. If you try to push her she won't learn to trust you. When she feels safe she'll come around you and she'll play so much you'll be begging her to stop. Just be patient and it will be ok soon. Good luck.

A lot of people have mentioned that you need to give your puppy a chance to get to know her environment. That is good advice. However, to encourage a behavior there are two key elements. First, you must do more of it. That is, to get your puppy to play, you must be sure to engage in a lot of play behavior. Second, you need to make sure your puppy associates playing with being with you and being inside. So, play a lot inside. Be sure to provide rewards for good behavior. Good luck!!

If you just got her yesterday she is probably wondering where the rest of the litter is. Give her a toy, pet her, put her on a lead and take her outside for a walk. Lots & lots of love.

Make her fell less intimidating. Buy her dog toys and especially don't try to get mad at her alot that will make her shy and might develop bad behavior promblems when she gets older. I did that with dogs when they were puppies and guess what it worked.

It just takes a bit of time for her to get comfortable with you. Be patient and loving for now. She'll come around.
