I am looking to buy a 6mp digital camera...the cute compact one. I see alot of Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm. Which is the better brand?

Canon and Nikon are the best brands for cameras, especially SLR film or digital. For point and shoot, I know many people extremely satisfied with the Powershot. Personally, I don't know anyone with a Coolpix so I can't comment on Nikon (I am extremely pleased with my D50 though), and I also know several people who love their Olympus point and shoot cameras. For Sony, I have a cybershot and thought it was ok, my results were blurry at times. If you go that route I recommend getting one with a Zeiss lens.

First of all Canon has been building cameras longer than Sony has been in business. They understand how photographers work and what photographers need. They build cameras that have the controls and the feel you need to be succesful. Sony did buy Minolta to get into the camera business but in the end they're still into electronics, not photography. Secondly, Sony is proprietary. I knew a guy who had a Sony SLR. He wanted to borrow my flash for a couple of pictures, he couldn't do it, Sony designed the hot shoe so that only a Sony flash could be connected. Sony uses the memory stick instead of the industry standard CF or SD card so you'll pay more for a memory card and you'll spend your money for nothing if you later get another brand of camera. Thirdly, Sony is not as reliable as I'd like. I burned out a Sony after only ten thousand images. Presently in addition to two Nikon SLR cameras (D70s & D200) I have a Canon P&S at the moment as my pocket camera. All of them have had more than ten thousand images put through them and all of them are good as new. Finally, if you're a real photography nut like I am sooner or later you'll go for an SLR if you're not already contemplating one now. Going that route is like a marriage, you're locked in once you start buying lenses and other accessories. It makes more sense to go with a camera maker who you can grow with. Both Canon and Nikon have an extensive array of camera bodies and accessories that will enable you to grow and to solve whatever photographic challenges you encounter. Sony does not. Eventually Sony will have more bodies and options but by then Canon and Nikon will continue to have even more. So my first suggestion is that you go with Canon, not Sony, and also that you give some consideration to Nikon as well. The other thing to think about, P&S cameras come in two basic flavours - those where you just press the button and the camera does everything and those that give you some control. You can't learn anything from a sinple point and shoot camera other than composition and even there you can't learn a lot beyond the basics. On the other hand if you get a P&S that allows you control, you have a chance for all kinds of opportunities to learn how to create effects and overcome camera limitations that is impossible to do with the simple ones. I'd go for a camera that has Auto for those days when you don't want to be bothered, and also has Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual modes. This way you can master this kind of stuff before you head to an SLR. As to what's better, both Canon and Nikon are comparable in quality and produce outstanding images. Sony actually produces reasonably good images too but when you add in the aggravations and the cost of proprietary gadgets they aren't a good deal or the best quality. In the end too "better" is what has the functions you feel you need and what feels good in the hand. You'll spend a lot of time holding it so it has to be comfortable for your hands. Image quality is not an issue with Nikon and Canon. I hope this helps you a little. Good Luck!

Don't get a Sony. They only take Sony's memory sticks, and they're expensive to replace. I would go for a Canon, they are a good brand and they use SD cards which are WAY cheaper than sony's crap.
