Smokey is about 9 yrs old, and pebble is about 1 and growing out his wings. Smokey use to zoom out of the cage and fly around the room a couple times. I leave the cage door open with food available on the cage. They do not like to come out. They have alot of toys in their cage, what can I do to encourage them to get some exercise?

I have two Budgies, and they sometimes have to be coaxed to come out. I have noticed that because there are two of them, the play out side the cage longer when they are both out on the floor. Try to get one out at a time, then put some treats on the floor, they should hang out awhile.

well you could put them in a small room like a bathroom no moving fans or such anyways and let them fly around for a little while each day and they'll get used to being out of the cage and it will become simpler to them sooner or later but especially do this for the young one so it gets used to it and they might be a little nervous but that is normal its all new to them but if they have never been out before slowly take them out and they might just fly back into the cage but you could try that every once and a while and they will get used to getting out of there cage it might take a little while but it should work GOOD LUCK

Try bringing the toys outside the cage when you leave the door open. Some birds stay in because of all the toys are in there.

You messed up when you got pebble's. Birds are funny, and when they alone will socialize more with you than when there another bird. I had a Cockatiel years ago, female, she would lay infertile eggs as there was no male. It was very interesting as we played and she flew free, usually to my shoulder. When she got ready to breed she would do this weird mating thing and I was the one she looked at, Strange, I know. Later I got this male and she had nothing to do with him. This bird breeder told me, she in love with you. It was trippy. He said; "I had a Parrot and a pair of cocktiels once and the female had nothing to do with the male". Later he realized the female loved the parrot!!!!
So, if, Smokey is male/female and pebbles female/male, they may have eyes for each other. Smokey never fell in love with you, sorry! But, it is normal.

My family has just recently (in the last 3 years) gotten a parakeet. He LOVES coming out of his cage and like you said he just "zooms out".

The funny thing though is he goes straight for the TV. It doesn't matter what's on as long as he gets to watch it. He ESPECIALLY likes it when animals are on. So when we let him out we flip it to animal planet for a bit and he goes wild :P

Parakeets are social birds that sort small flocks (notwithstanding tremendous flocks are hardship-free even as favorable circumstances enable it) and so that's common for 2 birds to attempt this.

put something that they really like outside(like their toys for example)you can also put another cage in the room so that their curiosity works, and they (hopefully)will fly from one cage to another, and it will be a good start(y can also put their toys,or snacks in the second cage also)and remenber that they are sensitive to light and enviroment,if they feel good its easier.good luck.

Mmm, maybe they got used to the cage and feel safer in there than outside. Maybe you could pick them and pet them more often. that way they may respond to you and get more used to be outside exercising.
