Often we don't know a problem existed with an airline/aircraft until it's on the news, in flames after having plowed into the side of a mountain or something, and then they come clean! What aren't they telling us NOW?

Sort of off topic after I read your details to the question... but my two cents...

How much trash they contribute to garbage dumps each year.

Did you know they don't recycle ANYTHING - no paper, no aluminum cans. Nothing.

Think about that next time you see the flight attendant collecting aluminum cans that it takes bags and bags... then think about that times all of the flights every day...

It seems to be something that they could do that would really help the environment that wouldn't take much effort- I bet there are biz that would do it for free just to get the recycle costs from all those cans...

So much information in so few answers.

First, it's false to say the airlines don't recycle at all. In fact some airlines do (AA is one) recycle cans as a way to raise funds for an aid fund for flight attendants... you'll notice sometimes that they'll put the cans in the bin, separate from the garbage bags. They don't do this for fun. (And no, it's not all the time, but it's not nothing either).

Secondly, no cell phones don't really interfere with cockpit instruments (very slightly if anything), but the ban on cell phones is at the request of the FCC to the FAA. It's because a cell phone that's "on" communicates with the cell towers, and thus several dozen cell phones traveling at 500+mph would contact all the towers along the way, creating a bottleneck in the communication system and grinding it to a halt.

Thirdly, there's no need to tell the public every thing all the time... it's just too much information for the public to care about, and all we want is a safe plane to fly. They do release info about major occurences (like the warning about checking the engines on 762s, after one blew up during test while the AA 762 it was attached to was sitting at LAX, and was subsequently scrapped due to extensive damage).

Fourth, the "best" thing you don't realize (imo): those lifevests on planes are mostly for show. In the history of aviation, no widebody plane (B767, B777, A330, A340, etc.) has ever made a successful water landing. Enjoy!

The real answer to this question is that the airline manufacturers arent tell anyone anything...

working in the travel industry i can tell you that we get updates regards this type of thing.

Airlines have teams to perform regular maintence as required by IATA, some have better skilled teams than others, hence why aeroflot keep crashing.. grin

the manufacturing faults however are not investigated until as a result of an incident they are found to be at fault, and my friend that is why aircrafts keep crashing....

They are not saying that time-wise flying is the most dangerous way of traveling (as opposed to miles-wise)
