There are many ways to "say" something. One picture (or visual) is worth a thousand words. Simply make the gesture of putting your finger into your wide open mouth as if to up-chuck.This will convey the same meaning as "American food portions are mind blowing." Think positively. With that siple, graphic gesture you will not only be completely understood in Germany, but in France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and fill in the blanks... even Greece, Italy, Sicily, &c. With one gesture you can go International!

Die Essensportionen in Amerika sind der reine Wahnsinn!
In Germany we wouldn't say "Nahrungsportionen", we say "Essensportionen".
"Der reine Wahnsinn" basically means pure insanity.
