No. It can even be at the end of the first paragraph, as long as the first paragraph supports and explains it.

Not necessarily. In an essay, the main topic sentence is usually the last sentence of a first paragraph. That is called the thesis.

not necessarily. most of time though, it does. If it is the first sentence, it makes the essay or that one paragraph more clear to the reader and makes the point of paragraph more vivid.

If i were you, i would make it first sentence.
