There is no proper way to ask such a thing...you have no right to ask anything so personal of anyone. You might ask yourself why you want to know so badly....it might be because you're just a bit nosy.
If you want to know because you genuinely care about her and want to help, then be her friend and show compassion. But, it is NEVER appropriate or within the boundaries of good manners to ask these things. If she wants you (or anyone else) to know her personal issues, she'll volunteer that information.

You have NO idea what CAN happen to a person in their lifetime..someone can have a car accident, or lose their parents in an instance, somone can lose their job, or someone can become very ill..(by the way) - these things come without notice..
so, my advise is please be patient with this person afterall you dont know what they have been threw...(after all you young)..

You don't. It's really none of your business. If she wants to tell you after she gets to know you better, she will. You could actually be in danger of being sued and/or fired for harassment if you question her.

I suppose you could ask her something mild like how things are going and see if she volunteers any information. Mostly work on your own life.

Perhaps, it is none of your business. If you feel that it is, be upfront and honest and simply ask her. "Not to offend you, do you have mental problems?"
