If you do monthly checks, and have no signs/ symptoms, your MD will probably suggest a baseline by the age of 35. Every woman on my mother's side has died of some form of cancer by the age of 51. With each member having cancer, my odds increase. My brother recently passed away from lung cancer. Please be pro-active, do your monthly checks, have your mammograms, etc.

Hello there

Mammography screening is still a topic of debate whether it can detect cancers in its early stage or not. Some says it can and some says that by the time mammorgraphy can detect the cancer it has already spread to other parts of the body. To add on, there are various things that can affect the resul i.e. the machine, the interpreter ...., there might be false results. If false positive - too bad you will have to go through all the painful steps to detect if it is cancer. This is not simple you may have to go through a lot. If false negative - again too bad, you will have false ideas. well what to do then. I am not saying to avoid mammography altogether. It can affect women of any age but it seemed to be a disease of older people try may be > 35 yrs. The best thing to do is to do regular examination of your breast, i.e. everytime you shower, some sites will teach you this. When you find any lump go to the doctor for further investigation.

* I have heard of a case - a lady had her two breast removed beforehand. She had a strong family history of breast cancer.

My maternal grandmother had BC in her 70's. I don't know my biological father's family history. I was diagnosed with BC at age 31 but it didn't show up on a mammogram. It did show up on an ultrasound. If you have a strong family history, stress this to your family doctor. There is a new procedure I saw on the news last night - radial imaging? - that is supposed to be more accurate than a mammogram.
I've known 18 yr. olds that have had mammograms due to high risk backgrounds.
Get checked.

Breast Cancer is by far one of the few cancers that is been pr oven to be hereditary. I would recommend a mammogram by age 35-40, at least. In the stands of our DNA, genetic material have pronounced cancer genes by our parents and former generations. Therefore, since it seems like Brest cancer runs in your family, it would be likely. So i would get the mammogram.

-Good luck to you,

My breast cancer was diagnosed by mammogram. There was no lump on examination by myself or the doctor however I did have a genetic history. When there is a family history of breast cancer it is best to inform your physician and proceed with his/her advice. There is no set age when you are at higher risk.
Early detection is the key to successful treatment. I was one of the winners.

i just read that one should go for a baseline at 35 if you have a family history of breast cancer...

also you should do a monthly self exam and have your breast examined at the doctor once a year when you have your pap smear.....
