I am trying to book a weekend away. The cheapest flights by far are to Trevisco airport and not Marco Polo.
Is it advisable to fly into Trevisco... how far is it from Venice itself, how long to travel, etc??

Treviso is a bus ride away. It doesn't really take too much longer that the water taxi from Marco Polo airport. You can book return coach tickets from the Ryanair website, or you can buy them at the airport, I think it's about £10ish return. Very easy and quick service to the main part of Venice. I've flown to both Treviso and Marco Polo and I wouldn't hesitate to return to Treviso because the flights are much cheaper there. Whilst you're there, try and take the vaporetto to the islands too... well worth doing.

The closest airport is Marco Polo, on the mainland near Mestre (a more typical Italian city, without Venice's unique structure). There is another airport in Treviso, very small and 40 km (25 mi) from Venice and it has bus service from airport to Venice every hour. Just keep in mind that airport is smaller and there would be long line for immigration and ticketing otherwise it saves few bucks along

Venice (Venezia) really wants no release, see getting there with hotelbye . This city is a huge fabled location for centuries. Only the title Venice is enough to conjure up a host of photos, actually for those who have not yet collection foot in Italy. From gondoliers in striped jerseys to the Rialto and the Bridge of Sighs, criminal balls, wonderful barges, courtesans in gondolas and failing palaces facing streets manufactured from water Venice is an amazing city. When the only link across the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge scars the location of the island's first settlement, called Rivus Altus and is currently one of many plenty of place that Venice needs to offer.

went to Travis some years ago to watch the rugby and we went into Venice every day by train. These run every 15 Min's and take about half an hour to get there. When at Venice train station you can walk around the canals or jump straight on a water taxi, these are a good way to sight see the water ways without the expence of the Gondolas.
