I think it's time for him to grow up already. He needs to take responsibility for things because you are teaching him that life is about handouts and he will fail in the real world. Not only should you not pay the ticket, but you should also make him pay his own insurance and repairs. If you continue to allow him to walk all over you, then he will never grow up, and he is too old to be acting like this.

This depends on whether you want a spoiled son or a happy son in five years.
He was driving the car he needs to held responsible for that. It was unregistered and he choose to drive the car. If the registration needed to be taken care of and you agreed to do that, he should at least be old enough to keep an eye on it for you.
So he pays the fine and you get the car registered so it doesn't happen again.
Just how much are you going to cover for him and for how long?

Not really. He was dumb enough to drive an unregistered motor vehicle, he should be man enough to pay the ticket. However, you have made him dependent upon you for everything connected with the car. Therefore he feels that you "owe" him for anything to do with the car. Sit him down, hand him the registration, and tell him it is going in his name. Tell him he is now responsible for the vehicle. He can keep it, sell it, or stick it where the sun doesn't shine. You are no longer taking responsibility for his transportation.

NO, he is not right to make you pay for the ticket. A registration is required to operate a vehicle NOT to own it! He could have told you that it was expired and taken the bus until it was renewed or paid for it himself if you could not pay it before it was expired. Based on the terms you spelled out - you would have to reimburse him for the registration if he had paid for it.

You have treated him well, and he is taking advantage. If he couldn't be bothered keeping track of the expiry date it is his ticket. I would tell him to either pay it, or you pay it and take the car.

yes he is right. if the car is registered in your name, then the DMV nregistration notices are addressed to YOU. Once you get the notice, just tell your son to fork over however much the registration is.
If you dont want that responsibility, take him down to the DMV, pay $15 and transfer the ownership over to him if you are that lazy and dont want to open your mail. then it will be all on him.

If you are the one that's been taking care of all his paperwork for so long, how do you expect him to take responsibility for this? I think this one's on you.
