Our cabinets are stained a dark brown color, our counters and floor are white, but our appliances are almond in color. Also, we have a picture that has shades of light peach / orange in it. Any suggestions on what color might look good?

I'm seeing----
Upper Dark Brown cabinets at ceiling, dark brown base cabinets connecting to white floor, almond appliances, & a wall picture of peach & orange you no doubt want to keep. OK...Dark brown cabinets & almond appliances will tie in as 2 warm colors, the peach (warm color) & orange will compliment the warm color of almond appliances & all come together. Now white countertops & white floors, very exceptable yet white is the cool color.
.
I have a side biz for 25 yrs where I go into homes & make ugly stuff work, maybe change a thing or 2 or rip some or all out IF the customer really can afford it or truly doesn't like what is there to work with.

This is what I'd do first, decide & use beautiful crown moulding (4 inch wide) all way around room, if U can't afford the crown moulding (widest most expensive),I'd definitely use at least a 2 inch molding & chair rail every wall in the kitchen. What will happen, you'll kinda break up the white / brown from floor to white counters, and ceiling high dark cabinets back to the white countertops. Place the height of moulding where the counter top sits, will probably be 37-38 inches from floor. Go ahead & either paint/ stain the moulding (I would stain) as close to the cabinet color as you can & put 2 coats at least of semi or high gloss minwax-a couple days after the paint or stain has dried on the moulding, set it aside till you get the walls painted. We're doing a chair rail look & does change the look in a room, very country, very metro, very modern or classic, all according to how you have your home theme/decorated. I love the country cozy welcome home look.

Wall color--stay away from beiges & eggshell,so drab looking. You can actually get a new & different look on walls by painting one color 37 inches from floor---white floor meeting bright high gloss white, mark 37 inches from floor all around room, use a tape measure from floor, make a mark w/pencil every 16/20 inches-37 inches from end of tape measure as it sits on floor, mark with lead pencil & finish marking one wall,go back & use level to get straight line all way across & continue till the room has the line you'll paint to. I would use semi gloss white or bright white high gloss, your choice, but the glossy white is so light giving and easy to clean. On the top part above the line, I'd use (paint) a lite peach shade,no more than a medium shade & no darker toned than the almond appliances. If you do use 2 colors above & below, after paint has dried, go back & remark the walls 37 inches from floor w/lead pencil, mark all across wall as you did 1st time & use the level as a ruler to draw the line & level the line according to the bubbles in the level. this is where the bottom of the moulding will be attached to wall You can of course paint the moulding a bright glossy white, and I'd let the moulding meet the top of white counter top to bring the cabinets/counter tops/ together. this is where I use the 37 inch measurement from floor, you can adjust to the height you thinks looks best, no rule here, only what looks pleasing to your eye & but I would put the moulding next to the height of counter top. Buy a $5-$10 mitre box to cut professional angled carpenter corners when installing the moulding. I do set the nail heads in the moulding after attaching to wall.

Please add comments after you decide which of our answers that influences you & tell us the colors you used.

Good luck!!!..PS....buy & use those wonderful flexible purdy paint brushes to paint/to cut in paint at ceiling & near the cabinets. They are a bit pricey, but you'll never use another after you use a purdy, they slide in like a limp dishrag & will not run, smear paint into areas you don't want the paint to touch. Always wash out, clean scrub the brush after each use & hang like a broom does to store, dry & you'll never have to buy brushes again, except to get all the sizes as I have accumulated in past 6 years.

Are you in love withthe picture or just determined to use the colors in it? The appliances can be spray painted white( there's a special appliance paint for it). Paint them white so they will coordinate. If you love the colors in the picture than you absolutely can go with the peachy color. If you're not sure you can go out and buy a decorative kitchen towel set that you just are in "love" with and pull the color for the walls out of that. Then you can use the additional colors from the towels to help you pull the accessories together. See - if they are using the colors in fabric in a pattern, then you can garentee that they'll look great in your decor. Don't be afraid of the darker cabinets. They add character. The white counters (and soon to be white appliances) will be considered neutral, therefore when all is said and done, they will fade into the background.

Wow all the colours are really outdated. I would even lose the picture. New kitchens are often "beech wood" colouring or an old fashioned white look. Some colours are also said to affect the appetite - orange is really bad for this, as is yellow. Why don't you flick through some home magazines and get an idea about what is new and what appeals to you.

I found a color called 'Bees Nectar' made by Dutch Boy. It is really beautiful... not too in your face, but a really good color that would go with your cabinets, counter and floor. As for the pic, now would be a good time to put up a new one!!!

you ought to not paint timber cabinets. Its a disgrace to cover the colour of the organic timber. That being reported, if the unique cabinets have been stained, they may be sanded down, and re-complete in a organic state (sparkling varnish) or stained a lighter coloration. counting on the age of the cabinets, they may be all timber, in contrast to extra moderen cabinets that are a melamine indoors, with a timber veneer outdoors. if it is the case, be careful while sanding the veneer, as that's amazingly skinny. (sometimes a million/sixty fourth to a million/thirty second thick). in the event that they're all timber, sanding is effective, and it will show you how to take dings and dents out of the timber, making the cabinets seem lots extra effective.
