If fair-trade coffee costs 50 cents a cup more than a cup of Starbucks coffee, would you be willing to pay for this? Why?

I would just stick with Starbucks. I'm cheap and 50 cents add up.

Starbucks coffee is cheap because they buy from the cheapest supplier. There are farms in Brazil which use slave labour, they capture people and force them to work. It is not beyond belief that Starbucks buys from these people. If they DON'T buy from them they still buy from people who use (to quote Marx) wage slavery - the farmers pay their workers so little that the workers cannot afford to quit, because they'd starve.

Fairtrade costs more because normal coffee is so cheap it screws the farmers over - it's cheap because the farmers (or their labourers) effectively don't get paid. Fairtrade actually pays the farmers a fair price. Isn't it worth paying a little bit extra so that people in the third world can work their way out of poverty?

Neither, coffee should be served black in ceramic mugs. no cream, no milk, no latte, no gimmicks, no flavor. Just a plain, cup of Joe. If you don't like it, then you don't like coffee, but don't buy over priced foam/cream/milk blends at a coffee shop.

I love Starbucks, but if Fair-trade has better java, then it would be worth paying more money for.
